This is how I learned hairpin lace and I appreciate how Ellen demonstrates both right and left handed versions.

then it wraps around the back, insert your hook into your knot…
yo, and pull through a loop…
Then you are ready to start crocheting your strip. The trick is to think of each loop as a stitch…
with a front loop and a back loop. Most often you will work into the front loop.
Or you can even work a stitch around both loops like this…
Your stitches will look something like this…
ready for what comes next.
With a simple strip you can make a bookmark like this…
